Villamediana Library

LThe starting points of the new project Villamediana de Iregua library They are: Development of the complete program of a public library for a municipality of 7,468 inhabitants, design of a building with volumes adapted to the site in which it is located, seeking to loosen the urban fabric and compliance with the PASSIVHAUS standard.

The proposed volume consists of a combination of two pieces, the first prism is entirely used as a library while the second prism is used to house the building's services. Next to the union of the two volumes there is a patio whose purpose is to guarantee natural lighting conditions throughout the interior of the library.

Concept

The resulting volume is partially buried in the ground in order to reduce its height and minimise the size of the building in relation to its surroundings, favouring the perception of a more open urban layout. Furthermore, the reduction in height and the slope of the roof facilitate access to it from Escuelas Street on the northeast corner of the building, so that the roof becomes a public space.
The largest opening is on the west façade, as this is the main façade of the building and is where the main entrance is. As this orientation also involves the risk of overheating during the summer months, a system of vertical sunshades has been provided. The arrangement of these sunshades has been carried out following an aesthetic criterion of bar code, which translates to the name “library” and whose visual appearance resembles that of the spines of books arranged on a shelf.

This project constitutes a milestone in efficient architecture as it is the first public building certified Passivhaus in Spain.
