Official School of Languages Ibiza

LThe proposal for the new Official Language School in Ibiza is part of the Comprehensive Rehabilitation Plan for the Sa Coma Barracks promoted by the Consell Insular of Ibiza and specifically includes the rehabilitation of pavilions 206 and 207 with a total constructed area of 2,995 m2.

In order to centralise the entrance and give the buildings a unified character, it is proposed to create a new central body, the entire width of the space between the buildings, 16 metres deep and with two floors, with a volume similar to that of the existing buildings. This building will include the entrance and the rooms that serve the two buildings, linking the routes on the ground floor and the first floor.

Concept

In the existing buildings, a series of structural reforms are carried out to enable the new vertical communication cores, to allow a large open-plan multipurpose room and to enable the passage of facilities for the corridors without lowering the interior free height too much.
The presence of the green area between the two buildings as a private garden suggests that the buildings open onto this new space and that the entrances and main circulation routes are carried out through it. This action therefore involves completely opening up the longitudinal façades that face this central courtyard, giving more light to the interior spaces and generating a whole series of visuals between the buildings and the new green area that reinforce the unitary character of the complex.
On the other hand, since this is a rehabilitation of two buildings that are part of a group of buildings of the same typology, it seems appropriate to maintain the composition of the longitudinal facades that open towards the other buildings, so that the composition of the group is not lost.
The new building envelope is designed to provide the highest thermal and airtight performance to achieve the Passivhaus Plus standard.

To provide visual continuity between the green areas located to the north and south of pavilions 6 and 7 and to act as a visual attraction, it is proposed to cover the north and south facades of the two pavilions with a vertical garden of earth gabions, which, as explained later, will also serve to phytorefine grey water.
